If T is normal, then S=T−I is normal and σ(S)={0}. The C-star identity and normality imply ∥Sn∥=∥S∥n. The spectral radius formula consequently gives
∥S∥=r(S)=0,
(1)
so T=I.
Normality is essential. On ℓ2, let N send e2 to e1 and every other basis vector to zero. Then N=0 but N2=0, so
σ(I+N)=1+σ(N)={1},
(2)
while I+N=I.
