Taking real parts of the geometric sum gives
an=ℜ1−eiy1−ei(n+1)y,
(1)
so (an) is bounded when cosy=1. It cannot converge: convergence would imply cos(ny)=an−an−1→0, but then
cos(2ny)=2cos2(ny)−1→−1,
(2)
whereas the same necessary condition applied to the subsequence 2n would give a limit of zero.
