Let Q=Qn+1. By polynomial division, every q∈Pn+1+k has a unique decomposition
q=Qs+r,s∈Pk,r∈Pn.
(1)
Every node is a zero of Q, so In(Qs)=0. The assumed degree-n exactness also gives In(r)=I(r). Hence
In(q)=I(r),I(q)=I(Qs)+I(r).
(2)
Therefore In(q)=I(q) for every q∈Pn+1+k if and only if
I(Qs)=⟨Q,s⟩=0
(3)
for every s∈Pk. This proves the nodal-polynomial criterion for quadrature exactness.
