By definition of the concave conjugate, u(x)≤u(y)+xy for all x,y>0. Put x=H⋅P1 and y=Y1, take expectations, and use the deflator identity:
E[u(H⋅P1)]≤E[u(Y1)]+E[Y1H⋅P1]=E[u(Y1)]+X0Y0.
(1)
The maximizing condition in the definition of u is u′(x)=y, so equality holds when u′(H⋅P1)=Y1 almost surely. This is utility duality with martingale deflators.
