Choose an angle 2πα with α∈/Q. Rotation through that angle has infinite order, so the subgroup it generates is isomorphic to Z.
The group also contains a copy of Z2. Choose real numbers α,β such that 1,α,β are linearly independent over Q, for example α=2 and β=3. Define
ϕ:Z2⟶SO(2),ϕ(m,n)=R2π(mα+nβ).
(1)
This is a homomorphism. If ϕ(m,n)=I, then mα+nβ∈Z, and the stated rational independence forces m=n=0. Thus ϕ is injective and its image is isomorphic to Z2.
