The orbital plane has normal parallel to the conserved angular momentum. If its inclination to the equatorial plane is ψ, then Lz=Lcosψ. Therefore
pθ2=L2−sin2θLz2=sin2θL2(sin2θ−cos2ψ),
(1)
so
pθ(θ)=±sinθLsin2θ−cos2ψ.
(2)
It vanishes when sinθ=∣cosψ∣, equivalently at the greatest northern and southern latitudes reached by the inclined orbit. These are the turning points of the polar motion.
