The Chernoff bound gives, for 0<λ<1/c,
P(X≥t)≤exp{−λt+2(1−cλ)νλ2}.
(1)
Writing u=ct/ν, elementary differentiation shows that the exponent is minimized at
λ∗=c1(1−1+2u1).
(2)
Substitution gives
P(X≥t)≤exp{−c2νh(u)},h(u)=1+u−1+2u.
(3)
Thus h is the Legendre transform generated by the sub-Gamma cumulant bound after its natural rescaling.
