The Polyakov action contains the dilaton coupling
SΦ=4π1∫ΣhΦ(X)R(2).
(1)
For a constant dilaton Φ0, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem gives SΦ=Φ0χ(Σ), so the path-integral weight contributes e−Φ0χ=gs−χ with string coupling gs=eΦ0. A connected closed oriented genus-g worldsheet has χ=2−2g. Including one conventional factor of gs for each of n external closed-string vertices gives the string genus expansion
Ag,n∝gs,2g−2+n.
(2)
For four external states on the sphere, this is gs2.
