14D
Spatial Fourier transformation gives
utt+c2k2u=0,u(k,0)=πe−k2/4,ut(k,0)=0.
(1)
Hence
u(k,t)=πe−k2/4cos(ckt).
(2)
Inverting and splitting the cosine into exponentials, or applying D'Alembert formula, yields
u(x,t)=21(e−(x−ct)2+e−(x+ct)2).
(3)
Thus the initial Gaussian separates into two half-amplitude Gaussian pulses travelling without distortion at speeds c and −c.
