No. Choose a nonzero φ∈Cc∞(R) and a number L larger than the diameter of its support, and set
un(x)=φ(x−nL).
(1)
Translation preserves both the L2 norm and the derivative norm, so (un) is bounded in H1(R). Distinct un have disjoint supports, and hence
∥un−um∥22=∥un∥22+∥um∥22=2∥φ∥22(n=m).
(2)
Thus the sequence has no L2-Cauchy subsequence and therefore no strongly convergent subsequence. The embedding H1(R)↪L2(R) is not compact.
