Let ψ1 be the normalized ground state for
H1=T+V1.
(1)
Using it as a trial state for H2=T+V2, the variational principle gives
E2≤⟨ψ1,H2ψ1⟩=E1+⟨ψ1,(V2−V1)ψ1⟩.
(2)
The pointwise assumption V2≤V1 makes the last expectation nonpositive. Hence
E2≤E1.
