The classification of finite-dimensional representations of SU2 says that every irreducible is one of the Vn, and compactness gives complete reducibility. The standard alternating form
ω((u1,u2),(v1,v2))=u1v2−u2v1
(1)
is SU2-invariant and identifies V1 with V1∗. Taking symmetric powers gives Vn≅Vn∗ for every n. Therefore, if
V≅⨁nmnVn,
(2)
then
V∗≅⨁nmnVn∗≅V.
(3)
This proves self-duality of finite-dimensional SU2 representations.
