Set ω=π/(2τ). The condition rτ=−π/2 says r=−ω. Then
n(t)=Ccos(ωt)
(1)
satisfies
n′(t)=−Cωsin(ωt),rn(t−τ)=−Cωcos(ωt−π/2)=−Cωsin(ωt).
(2)
It is periodic with period 2π/ω=4τ. Every nonzero such solution is negative during half of each period, so it cannot represent a population size.
