In Peccei–Quinn theory, an anomalous spontaneously broken global symmetry replaces $\bar{\theta }$ by a dynamical axion field. Nonperturbative QCD generates an axion potential whose minimum lies at the CP-conserving value, dynamically relaxing the effective angle to zero.
