If a group acts on a finite set , it acts on the direct product of groups by permuting its factors. The resulting semidirect product is the permutation wreath product. For acting on two-point blocks and , it describes independent within-block swaps combined with a permutation of blocks, and has order . The action on is part of the definition; it need not be the regular action used in a regular wreath product.
For any perfect group and , the permutation wreath product is generated by elements of order three. The top is generated by 3-cycles. With , the product of the conjugate and is ; using gives . The commutator of and is , since distinct coordinate groups commute. Perfectness gives the entire first coordinate group, and transitivity gives all coordinates. No finite-generation assumption on is needed.
For every , let act by rooted permutations on the rooted tree of finite words over letters. Define to have local permutation at the pairwise incomparable vertices for , and identity elsewhere. Then is an embedding of and satisfies with trivial root permutation. The group is finitely generated and perfect because it is generated by two finite perfect subgroups.
The root permutation and sections define an injective homomorphism . To prove surjectivity, conjugate by the rooted cycle and take its commutator with . In wreath coordinates this leaves only in the first coordinate. Perfectness of therefore supplies the entire localized copy of there. Canceling it from the recursion for supplies a localized rooted in the second coordinate. Transitivity moves both kinds of generators to every coordinate, yielding the full base and hence the full wreath product. The group is infinite, since a nontrivial finite order could not satisfy .
