Longest-path rotation Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
If an endpoint of a longest path is adjacent to an internal vertex, replacing the incident path edge by that chord produces another longest path with the same vertex set and a new endpoint. Every neighbour of every endpoint obtained this way must remain on the original path.
This rotation technique is used in arguments surrounding Pósa's theorem and other Hamiltonian cycle criteria.
Pósa's theorem 2026-10-14
Pósa's theorem gives a sufficient degree-sequence condition for a Hamiltonian cycle in a finite simple graph. Longest-path rotation is a technique used in proving Hamiltonicity results; it is not itself the degree-sequence theorem.
