The material variables that a physical theory identifies with the distribution of stuff in ordinary space or spacetime, and through which it describes apparatus and recorded events. In particle Bohmian mechanics, actual particle configurations play this role; the wave function guides them. This is a way to specify an interpretation's account of matter, rather than a theorem that only particle ontologies are admissible.[ref]
