For <functions> $f$ and $g$ taking values in the same <field>, their <quotient of functions> is defined by $(f/g)(x)=f(x)/g(x)$ on the common <domain of a function> restricted to points where $g(x)\ne0$. Thus $f(x)=1$ and $g(x)=x$ on the <real line> give a <quotient of functions> defined only for $x\ne0$.
