The Ramanujan sum is cn(k)=∑1≤j≤n,(j,n)=1e2πijk/n. It is an integer: insert 1(j,n)=1=∑d∣(j,n)μ(d), sum the geometric series, and obtain cn(k)=∑r∣(n,k)rμ(n/r). Here μ is the Möbius function. Such sums connect roots of unity with integer character of a representation values.
