For hermitian generators satisfying {γI,γJ}+​=2δIJ and any nonzero vector v, the vectors γIv are linearly independent over the real numbers. Indeed, A=∑I​aI​γI with real aI​ obeys A2=(∑I​aI2​)1, so ∥Av∥2=(∑I​aI2​)∥v∥2. Complex coefficients need a different argument.
