Cesàro theorem for convergent sequences Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
If a real or complex sequence converges to , its Cesàro means have the same limit of a sequence. This is why Cesàro summation is a regular summation method when applied to the partial sums of a series.
Proof outline. Given , choose so that for . The triangle inequality gives, for ,
The finite initial contribution tends to zero, and the remaining contribution is at most . The converse fails: the alternating sequence has Cesàro means tending to zero while its terms do not converge.
Summation method 2026-10-14
A rule for assigning a value to some series through a specified limiting operation. It must say which series belong to its domain; different rules can have different domains. A regular summation method agrees with ordinary summation for every convergent series.
