For a steady rectangular-channel flow with discharge Q=bhu, the shallow-water specific energy relative to the bed is E=h+Q2/(2gb2h2). At fixed discharge and width, Eh=1−F2, where the Froude number satisfies F2=Q2/(gb2h3). The minimum is Ec=3hc/2, with hc=(Q2/(gb2))1/3. Without dissipation, E+H is the conserved Bernoulli equation head for bed elevation H.
