For constant long-wave speed and S0∝eβx, a standing free-surface amplitude obeys η′′+βη′+k2η=0. The transformation η=e−βx/2Y gives Y′′+(k2−β2/4)Y=0. Impermeable ends at 0,L impose η′=0, yielding the displayed nonzero-frequency eigenvalues and ηn∝e−βx/2[cos(nπx/L)+βLsin(nπx/L)/(2nπ)]. A separate zero-frequency mode changes the uniform water level.
