For a finite group G, Tate cohomology joins group cohomology and group homology through the norm map NG=∑g∈Gg. For r≥1 it equals ordinary group cohomology; for r≤−2 it equals H−r−1(G,M). The middle terms are H0(G,M)=MG/NGM and H−1(G,M)=ker(NG)/IGM, where IGM is generated by gm−m. For the trivial module Z, H−2(G,Z)=Gab. With multiplicative coefficients the norm is the product of the translates.
