Thermal <energy> comparable with an <exciton binding energy> promotes dissociation and often washes out narrow bound-exciton resonances. Comparing $k_BT$ with binding <energy> is a scale estimate, not an exact disappearance criterion: densities, screening, oscillator strength and linewidths also matter.
