Rainer Ludwig Claisen investigated rearrangements that make new carbon–carbon chemical bonds. His 1912 paper describes conversion of phenol allyl ethers into carbon-allylated phenols, a transformation now associated with the Claisen rearrangement. The product moves the allyl attachment from oxygen to the aromatic carbon skeleton.[ref]
