For a finitely generated module M=(m1,…,mt) and a prime ideal P, if MP=0, choose si∈/P annihilating mi. Their product f∈/P annihilates all of M. Conversely such an f becomes a unit in RP, forcing MP=0. Thus
{P:MP=0}=⋃f∈AnnR(M)D(f)=SpecR∖V(AnnR(M)).
(1)
This identifies the support of a module M with the Zariski-closed set V(AnnR(M)). For M=0, use f=1. No Noetherian assumption on R is required.
