Metafont is a font definition language and a system developed by Donald Knuth as part of his TeX typesetting system. Introduced in the late 1970s, Metafont is primarily used to define and create bitmap fonts based on mathematical equations and descriptions. Unlike traditional font design, where fonts are typically created using graphical design tools, Metafont allows designers to specify a font's characteristics through a programming-like syntax.
