It was developed to address some limitations of traditional vegetation indices like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which can be influenced by soil backgrounds, especially in regions with sparse vegetation. SAVI incorporates a soil adjustment factor (L), which allows for better estimation of vegetation coverage in different soil conditions.
