It is commonly used in solar and astrophysical research to quantify the intensity of solar radiation, particularly from the Sun's active regions such as sunspots and solar flares. 1 SFU is defined as a flux density of \(10^{-22}\) watts per square meter per hertz (W/m²/Hz).
