The term "calcite sea" refers to a period in Earth's history when the oceans were saturated with calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), primarily in the form of calcite, which is one of the two main crystal forms of calcium carbonate (the other being aragonite). This concept is significant in understanding the composition of marine sediments and the development of marine life, particularly during the Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras.
