Ellery Schempp is best known for his role in a landmark Supreme Court case concerning the separation of church and state in the United States. In 1963, Schempp was a high school student who protested a Pennsylvania state law that required public schools to start the day with a Bible reading and recitation of the Lord's Prayer. He believed this practice violated his religious beliefs and the principle of separation of church and state.
