Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter and the fundamental units of chemical elements. They consist of three main types of subatomic particles: 1. **Protons**: Positively charged particles found in the nucleus (the central part) of the atom. 2. **Neutrons**: Neutral particles (no charge) that also reside in the nucleus alongside protons. 3. **Electrons**: Negatively charged particles that orbit the nucleus in energy levels or shells.
Area density, also known as surface density, is a measure of how much mass is distributed over a given area. It is commonly used in physics, materials science, and engineering to describe the distribution of mass in two-dimensional areas. Area density is typically expressed in units such as kilograms per square meter (kg/m²) or grams per square centimeter (g/cm²).
The Aethrioscope is a specialized instrument designed for measuring and analyzing atmospheric conditions, particularly focusing on elements such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. It is used in a variety of fields, including meteorology, climatology, and environmental science, to gather data that helps in understanding weather patterns and climate changes. The instrument can vary in complexity, from simple handheld devices to sophisticated equipment used in research studies.
Cloud and fog physics is a branch of atmospheric science that focuses on understanding the formation, development, and interactions of clouds and fog in the Earth's atmosphere. This field of study encompasses various processes related to the microphysical, thermodynamic, and dynamic properties of clouds and fog. ### Key Components of Cloud and Fog Physics: 1. **Cloud Formation**: Clouds form when moist air rises, cools, and condenses into water droplets or ice crystals.
Boundary layer meteorology is a specialized field of meteorology that focuses on the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), which is the lowest part of the Earth's atmosphere. This region extends from the surface up to a few kilometers above ground level and is directly influenced by the Earth's surface and its characteristics, such as land use, vegetation, topography, and temperature.
Atmospheric sounding is a technique used to measure and analyze the vertical profile of atmospheric variables, such as temperature, humidity, and pressure, throughout the atmosphere. This process provides critical data that helps meteorologists and scientists understand weather patterns, climate variations, and atmospheric conditions. There are several methods and instruments used for atmospheric sounding, including: 1. **Weather Balloons (Radiosondes)**: A common method involving the release of balloons that carry instruments (radiosondes) into the atmosphere.
Walter Orr Roberts (1915–1990) was an American meteorologist and a significant figure in the field of atmospheric sciences. He is best known for his work in weather forecasting, as well as for his role in the establishment of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. Roberts was instrumental in advocating for the use of computers in meteorology, which revolutionized weather modeling and forecasting.
Richard A. Anthes is a prominent figure in the fields of meteorology and atmospheric science. He is best known for his contributions to weather forecasting and climate research, particularly through his work with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the United States, where he served as director from 1988 to 1999. Anthes has been influential in the development of numerical weather prediction models and has made significant contributions to understanding mesoscale meteorology and the interaction between weather and climate.
John H. Seinfeld is an American atmospheric scientist known for his significant contributions to the understanding of air pollution, atmospheric chemistry, and climate change. He is a professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and has authored numerous scientific papers and books on topics related to aerosol science and environmental engineering. His work has had a profound impact on the fields of atmospheric science and environmental policy, particularly through his research on the effects of aerosols and chemical reactions in the atmosphere.
As of my last knowledge update in October 2021, there is no widely recognized entity, concept, or term specifically called "Jean Laby." It is possible that it refers to a person, a brand, a fictional character, or something that has become notable after my last update.
Javier Martín-Torres is a Spanish astrophysicist and researcher known for his work in planetary science, particularly in the study of Mars and the potential for life in extraterrestrial environments. He has been involved in research related to the atmospheric conditions on Mars, the habitability of other celestial bodies, and the implications of his findings for understanding the potential for life beyond Earth.
Gavin Schmidt is a prominent climate scientist known for his work in climate modeling and research. He is the director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and has contributed significantly to understanding climate change and its impacts. Schmidt is also involved in public communication about climate science, helping to bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding. He regularly engages in discussions regarding climate policy, predictions, and the importance of addressing climate change.
Garth Paltridge is an Australian atmospheric scientist known for his work in climate science and his critical views on the prevailing consensus regarding climate change. He has contributed to the field through research, publications, and public commentary. Paltridge has been a vocal advocate for skepticism regarding certain climate change models and policies, and he often emphasizes the complexity of climate systems and the uncertainties that exist in climate projections. His views have sparked discussions and debates within the scientific community and among the public regarding climate change discourse.
Fred Singer (1924–2020) was an American theoretical physicist and a prominent figure in climate change debates. He was known for his work in various fields, including atmospheric physics and environmental science. Singer was a professor emeritus at the University of Virginia and held various positions in academia and government throughout his career. Singer is perhaps best known for his skepticism about the extent and causes of global warming, advocating for a more cautious interpretation of climate data.
Florence van Straten is known for her work as a Dutch actress and television presenter. She has appeared in various television shows and films, gaining recognition in the entertainment industry. Additionally, she may have made contributions to Dutch culture through her performances and public appearances. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it would be best to check recent sources or news articles.
Everette Joseph is an American astrophysicist known for his work in the fields of astrophysics and space science. He serves as the director of the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center (NAIC) and has previously held various academic and leadership roles in research institutions. His research often focuses on radio astronomy and astrophysics, contributing to our understanding of cosmic phenomena.
"Specula Melitensis Encyclica," or more simply the "Encyclical of Malta," refers to a document issued by the Catholic Church, specifically related to Malta. However, it is important to clarify that there doesn't seem to be a widely recognized or well-documented encyclical by that precise title that is known in the broader context of Catholic doctrine or encyclical literature.

Pinned article: Introduction to the OurBigBook Project

Welcome to the OurBigBook Project! Our goal is to create the perfect publishing platform for STEM subjects, and get university-level students to write the best free STEM tutorials ever.
Everyone is welcome to create an account and play with the site: ourbigbook.com/go/register. We belive that students themselves can write amazing tutorials, but teachers are welcome too. You can write about anything you want, it doesn't have to be STEM or even educational. Silly test content is very welcome and you won't be penalized in any way. Just keep it legal!
We have two killer features:
  1. topics: topics group articles by different users with the same title, e.g. here is the topic for the "Fundamental Theorem of Calculus" ourbigbook.com/go/topic/fundamental-theorem-of-calculus
Articles of different users are sorted by upvote within each article page. This feature is a bit like:
    • a Wikipedia where each user can have their own version of each article
    • a Q&A website like Stack Overflow, where multiple people can give their views on a given topic, and the best ones are sorted by upvote. Except you don't need to wait for someone to ask first, and any topic goes, no matter how narrow or broad
This feature makes it possible for readers to find better explanations of any topic created by other writers. And it allows writers to create an explanation in a place that readers might actually find it.

  2. local editing: you can store all your personal knowledge base content locally in a plaintext markup format that can be edited locally and published either:
This way you can be sure that even if OurBigBook.com were to go down one day (which we have no plans to do as it is quite cheap to host!), your content will still be perfectly readable as a static site.
Figure 5. . You can also edit articles on the Web editor without installing anything locally.
