The tangent-plane bound gives ${\int }_{{\Sigma }^{\prime }}\phi \le \mathrm{Vol}({\Sigma }^{\prime })$, while calibration gives ${\int }_{\Sigma }\phi =\mathrm{Vol}(\Sigma )$. Thus $\Sigma$ minimizes volume in its relative homology class and is a minimal submanifold wherever smooth.
