If Σ is calibrated by φ and Σ′ is homologous with the same boundary, Stokes theorem gives ∫Σφ=∫Σ′φ. The tangent-plane bound gives ∫Σ′φ≤Vol(Σ′), while calibration gives ∫Σφ=Vol(Σ). Thus Σ minimizes volume in its relative homology class and is a minimal submanifold wherever smooth.
