 Current-in-plane magnetoresistance

The measuring electric current flows along the layer planes. This is the geometry of the Fe-Cr giant magnetoresistance experiments. Scattering and current paths through an extended stack require a transport description; treating successive layers as ordinary series resistors would not follow from this geometry.
