A global hydrodynamic mode is a separated solution $a(x)e^{-i\omega t}$ satisfying the complete spatial boundary conditions of a linearized flow problem. Its eigenvalue depends on the spatial domain and variable coefficients, rather than solely on a local dispersion relation.
