Vertical pressure gradient balances gravitational force per unit volume. Subtracting the resting hydrostatic state and using kinematic pressure gives for a Boussinesq approximation buoyancy anomaly. The approximation neglects vertical acceleration; this diagnostic relation is what couples buoyancy perturbation to the vertical pressure profile.
