Jack Steinberger coauthored the experiment establishing a distinction between the muon neutrino and electron neutrino. A beam produced through meson decays generated predominantly muons in the detector rather than the expected electron showers for a single common neutrino type. Comparing the two interaction signatures made lepton identity experimentally testable.[ref]
