A theoretical particle physicist who, with Gerardus 't Hooft, developed a consistent procedure for regularization and renormalization of gauge theories. Their 1972 paper handles divergent loop calculations while preserving the identities needed for gauge consistency in nonanomalous cases. This made higher-order predictions in theories such as the electroweak interaction calculable rather than formally infinite.^[ref]
