A phosphine ligand such as donates a phosphorus lone pair. It can also accept pi backbonding into orbitals with substantial P–R antibonding character; phosphorus orbitals need not be essential acceptors. Alkyl substitution generally increases sigma donation relative to electron-withdrawing substituents.
