A resonance structure is one Lewis structure contributing to a chemical resonance description. The contributors retain the same atomic nuclei in the same positions, the same connections, and the same total valence electron count and electric charge; allocations of bond pairs, lone pairs, and formal charges differ. They are alternative representations of one electronic structure, not distinct substances with different atomic arrangements. See Chemistry 2e, 7.4: resonance forms.
