A diagram is A-adequate if changing a single smoothing of its all-A state joins two different state circles, and B-adequate analogously. It is adequate if both conditions hold. In an adequate diagram the top and bottom degree terms of the Kauffman bracket arise uniquely from these two states. Reduced alternating diagrams are adequate because their Tait graphs and duals have no loop edges.
