For a normalized spherical harmonic of degree ℓ≥1, write ρ1=s(r)Y and ϕ1=F(r)Y. Integration of the radial Poisson equation gives A=−4πG∫r2F∗sdr, where A=∫[r2∣F′∣2+ℓ(ℓ+1)∣F∣2]dr. Cauchy-Schwarz inequality and ∫∣F∣2≤A/[ℓ(ℓ+1)] give the displayed bound on ∣Eg∣=A/(4πG). For bounded density amplitudes with fixed radial support this decays as ℓ−2, giving a quantitative angular short-scale justification of the Cowling approximation.
