Let two parallel curves β1,β2 cut a torus boundary into annuli A1,A2, and let a slope α meet each βi once. Identifying A1 with A2 by an orientation-reversing map fixing their boundary and matching the two arcs of α produces the same manifold as the Dehn filling X(α). A collar of the boundary turns the quotient region into the solid torus attached by the filling.
