If an isogeny of elliptic curves π:E1→E2 satisfies πϕ1=−ϕ2π for their Frobenius isogenies, then π(1−ϕ1)=(1+ϕ2)π. Multiplicativity of the degree of an isogeny gives deg(1−ϕ1)=deg(1+ϕ2). The degree parallelogram law then gives the displayed point-count identity, since deg(1−ϕi)=#Ei(Fq) and degϕi=q.
