In an isothermal atmosphere with constant density scale height H, the equation δρtt−c2δρzz−(c2/H)δρz=0 loses its first spatial derivative under δρ=e−z/(2H)Ψ. Direct differentiation gives Ψtt−c2Ψzz+c2Ψ/(4H2)=0. Thus a plane wave has dispersion relation ω2=c2k2+ωc2, with real acoustic cutoff frequency ωc=c/(2H). The cutoff term is positive; a minus sign would instead predict growing sufficiently long spatial modes. Vertical propagation requires ∣ω∣≥ωc within this ideal constant-coefficient model.
