Write the finite cyclic group as Cn=⟨r⟩. A group homomorphism is determined by r↦ra; it is a group automorphism exactly when ra generates Cn, equivalently gcd(a,n)=1. Composition multiplies the exponents modulo n, proving Aut(Cn)≅(Z/nZ)×. Its group order is therefore Euler's totient function ϕ(n). A group homomorphism C2→Aut(Cn) is determined by a unit a with a2≡1(modn).
