For disjoint pairs Ai,Bi such that Ai∩Bj=∅ whenever i=j, the displayed sum is at most one. In a uniformly random permutation, the events that all of Ai precedes all of Bi are disjoint events, and their probabilities are the summands. Taking Bi to be the complement of the members Ai of an antichain recovers the LYM inequality.
