In a brane-world model some fields, typically ordinary matter and gauge fields, are localized on a lower-dimensional brane, while gravity propagates through the higher-dimensional bulk. Compact volume or a warped metric can then separate the observed gravitational scale from local matter scales. A model must specify field localization, boundary conditions and stabilization rather than identifying a brane with an arbitrary compactification.
